Math Reflection, Fractions and Decimals

When is it more useful to use fraction or decimal notation?

Fractions and decimals are both really useful, but there are times where one way is better than the other. For example, fractions are really easy to use when you are dividing numbers because fractions are division. But, when fractions get too big, they're hard simplify, add, etc. Decimals are easy to use when you do anything, from division to addition. The way you solve decimals is the same way you solve natural numbers. But there is a huge con, it's when decimals go on forever and ever.

Examples:
1) 5÷3
For this question, using fractions is more easier because all you have to do is take 5 and make it the numerator and take 3 and make it the denominator. So the fraction your going to end up with is 5/3 which is equivalent to 

1⅔. This way is way easier than using decimals because the way your going to solve the problem using decimals is long division, and with problems like this, long division will take forever.

2) 0.25+0.80
For this question, using decimals is the fastest way because all you have to do is add the two numbers like how you add natural numbers. You could use fractions but you would have to do two steps to get to your answer. Step one is to convert the decimals to fractions and step 2 is to solve.

When comparing two positive whole numbers with different numbers of digits, such as 115 and 37, the one with more digits is greater. Does this rule work for comparing decimals?

No it doesn't because with positive numbers, the more digits the bigger but with negative numbers (decimals), the more digits the smaller. You can see how it works on the place value chart.

Examples:
1) 2100 or 0.1232523
2100 is bigger because it is positive, even though 0.1232523 had more digits. 2100 is bigger because 0.1232523 is a negative number.

Submarine Model Building Reflection

Question 1

Draw a colored sketch of your submarine model in the floating, sinking or neutrally buoyant position.

I choose to sketch my submarine model in the sinking position.

Part of the design process, is to think of design ideas to try and then test to see how those design ideas actually work. 

• Describe any design ideas that you had which did not work as expected.  
• Describe any design ideas that you had which did work as expected. 

It took 2 models to get to the model I have now. One model did not work as expected and one model that technically works.

The model that didn't work was a bottle with many medium sized holes placed everywhere. The bottle cap was closed and there was a tube stuck into the interior of the bottle. Inside the bottle there were many rocks. It could sink but because the rocks could move freely inside the bottle, if the bottle tilts just a bit, the whole bottle would be vertical. There were too many rocks inside that I couldn't get the model to float again. 

The second model or the model that technically work was a model that was sketched above. It had 3 large holes and small holes. It had lots of metal taped next to the 3 big holes. The bottle's cap was still on. There was a tube that was stuck into the interior of the bottle. It could sink and rise halfway. I didn't have enough time to make the tube stiff and not be able to move around in the bottle. My model would be complete if the tube was stiff.

• Describe at least two ways that your model works like a real submarine.
• Describe at least two ways your model works differently than a real submarine.

2 ways that the model works like a real submarine:

-They both use the same method to sink and float. Both of the submarines take in water to sink and release water to float.

-They both can sink and float as many times as it wants to.

2 ways that the model works differently than a real submarine:

-There is no giant blowing air into a tube that makes the submarine float and sink. For model purposes, we used a tube. But in real life, there can't be a tube.

-The model can't move around, it can only rise and sink. On a real submarine, it can move around.

Question 4

Did you ever feel like you were not going to be able to successfully modify the plastic bottle to make it dive and float like a submarine?  If you did not give up, what strategies helped you persevere and keep going? 

There were many times where I felt like I couldn't modify the bottle to make it work like a submarine. One reason was that the materials were scarce. Materials like stones are actually very important to make the model submarine work. Another reason I felt like I couldn't do it is that when you make a mistake and you have to restart, you feel like you don't have anymore time to create a new one. 

One strategy that helped me kept going was learning from your mistakes. Like if you create a hole in the wrong place and it ruins the whole experiment, you learn from that. Next time you don't add holes in the wrong places. Another strategy that kept me going believing in yourself. I believed that I could make a whole new submarine with my new plan.

Fraction Comparison Reflection

You know how to compare fractions using cross products, LCD, and logical reasoning. When is it better to use one method over another?

Methods - Pros and Cons

Cross Products
Pro: It's a quick way to compare fractions, you only need to solve 2 equations.
Con: When the numbers get higher, it's harder to solve the equations.

LCD
Pro: Once you find the LCD, you just need to compare the numerators.
Con: If the LCD is really high, it's harder to find the new numerator.

Logical Reasoning
Pro: It requires no solving of equations!
Con: If the numerators are about the same, it's really hard to compare.


Examples

1) 5/7 or 6/8
For this question, I would use cross products because it's the quickest way to solve it. The numbers aren't huge and massive. Logical reasoning would not be a good method to use for this problem because the numerators are really close to each other. You could use LCD to solve this problem but that would take longer.

2) 21/35 or 46/70
For this question, I would use LCD because it's the easiest way to solve it. The LCD is pretty easy to find because 70 is a multiple of 35. Cross products would be another way to solve this problem but the numbers are really high which makes multiplying them harder. Logical reasoning would be hard to use because if you simplify the fractions, they both are more than 1/2.

3)3/82 or 32/35
For this question, I would use Logical reasoning because it's easy to use logical reasoning for this question. Also, you don't have to waste time doing unnecessary math. LCD and cross products would not be good methods because the numbers are really high.

Sportsmanship to me means being positive to others and being cool when good or bad things happen. One way I have shown sportsmanship this year is by shaking the opposing team members hands and say "good game".

-Offer encouragement to teammates, especially when they make mistakes

Special Effects

1. What special effect skill did you feel you best utilized in your 5x5? Which was special effect what the most difficult to incorporate?
I think that the slow motion really utilized the video. The hardest was cloning.

2. How did you brainstorm your story for your 5x5? Did you speak to some of your classmates or was it something you brainstormed on your own? How did storyboarding help your planning?
I saw a computer and it came to me, make a video on a stolen computer. We brainstormed it ourselves. It helped us not get lost and not think of ideas on the spot.
3. Describe what filming your 5x5 was like; did more work happen during filming or in post-production?
It was fun filming and more work was put in editing.
4. What other special effects would you have liked to have learned for this project? Why?
I am fine and I felt like we have covered all the special effects.

Personal Narrative Reflection

How have you grown as a writer?
I learned how to zoom and slow down on the moment. I also learned how to shorten down the less important parts of the story. More details on the moment, less on non-important stuff.

What new skills do you feel more confident to apply to your narrative writing?
I've learn how to make my leads better with a skill called SACRED seed leads. Each letter in sacred stands for a way to start your story. I also learned a skill called How Do I Do DAT. It's a way to make the body of the writing better. For the conclusion, we end with a "So What. These are 3 skills I feel more confident to apply to future narrative writing pieces.

What challenges did you face when writing your personal narrative?
When I first wrote the story, I didn't zoom into the moment. I had a lot of unimportant details. It was a bit of a challenge to focus on the moment.

How have you surprised yourself as a writer?
When I read my story, I had some emotional sentences. I didn't know I could write like that!

What feedback did you receive that will help you to grow as a writer?
I received a lot of constructive feedback. Most of the feedback told me to zoom in even more into the heart of the story.

The Big Accident

The Big Accident

It was a normal day. I was at a playdate at Adventure Cove having fun with my brother and two of his friends, until the big accident.

I was in line to slide down a slide at the Big Bucket Tree House. Water was dripping from the wet ropes holding the playground together. I looked at the line in front of me and behind me.

“Three more people,” I informed Justin, my brother. He nodded his head in reply.

My brother just got of the slide and out of the way. I looked at my hands and saw multiple scratches from ropes on the playground. I knew more scratches were coming. But I didn’t know that once I get off the slide, Adventure Cove would be over for me.

The lifeguard told me that it was safe to slide and so I sat down and let go of the bars above the start of the slide. Since my swimsuit wasn’t slippery, I had to use my hands to push myself down the slide. Once I got far enough that I could get up and walk to the exit, I got up. I quickly walked so I could catch up the rest. The exit was about a meter away, when I slipped.

I tried to get up and walk but I couldn’t. The only option was to get on my belly and use my hands to drag myself to the exit. I looked around to see if there was a seat I could sit on. When I saw a seat, I stopped looking around and squinted my eyes to double check that it was a seat.

Justin and his two friends continued playing at the Big Bucket Tree House while I sat on the edge of the pool, clueless of what I should do. I tried to walk but I couldn’t. I started to call Justin. “Justin!” I shouted as loud as I could.

Justin screamed back, “What!”

“Come here!” I told him because I didn’t want to shout out what happened.

“Wait!” Justin replied, “I’m playing with my friends!”

He went up the treehouse to slide down the slide again. He was so far away that if I shouted again, he wouldn’t hear it. The second he touched the playground floor, I screamed, “Come here!”

“Wait!” Justin said, becoming annoyed.

He went up the treehouse again to slide down the slide again. I can’t move and can’t call Justin! What should I do? I asked myself. Another minute of hard thinking has gone by and I thought of calling Ryan, Justin’s friend.

“Ryan” I called Ryan.

He came.

“I can’t walk.” I told him.

“Ok” Ryan said and walked away.

The same thing happened again, he didn’t help me! I felt so annoyed that tears started falling out of my eyes. I wiped the first few tears and I kept the rest of the tears in my eye. I just needed someone to tell my mom.

Before long, Ryan told my mom about me. My mom came over and got a lifeguard to help me. The lifeguards got a medic and the medic checked the injury to see if it minor or major. It was a minor injury. Even though Adventure Cove was over for me, I was and still am really thankful that it was just a minor accident. Now the next time I think of rushing, I know that it doesn’t always help. Thanks to my sprained ankle.

My Favorite Number Project

To summarize Unit 1, we chose a number and studied it. It was a fun thing to do and a great way to end a unit. My number was 16. I hope you like it!

When to find common multiples: If you want to find when 2 or more numbers reach the same number again.

Common Factors:

When to find common factors: When you want to equally share 2 or more items.

Question that requires you to find common factors: Johnny has 50 cans of apple juice and 2 packs of cheese. He wants to make packs of apple juice and cheese. All packs have the same amount of apple juice and cheese. What is the maximum number of packs Johnny can make?

How would you feel if you woke up and remembered that you had to go to boot camp? Excited or sad? Well when I woke up on the day I had to go to boot camp, I was really excited. Why? Because it was computer boot camp! This year every student was given their own macbook air from the school to use for the year. It’s a big responsibility because the school won’t fix the computer if it gets damaged, you have to fix it yourself. We went to all our classes like it was a normal day but instead of learning RLA or science, you would learn about blogging and laptop care. My favorite class was math, because we learned how to use google chrome and google calendar.

In 5th grade, I thought that the macbook wasn’t something you would use everyday and you wouldn’t have such a big responsibility. Last year, the teacher would remind us to charge out macbook pros and we’d leave them charging till the next day. This year, we have to remind ourselves to charge the laptop and put it in our bag before we leave for school. In these two days I learned about how much of a responsibility we have to have this $1000 machine. I also learned about how cool it is to use google calendar. My math teacher taught us this app. She would have us drive the projector to show everyone how to fix problems people came across with the app. That was fun.

Now I learned that having a macbook air is really cool and is a huge responsibility. This learning will impact us in the future. It will help us be more responsible and discover what’s in this new technology and more. I think that the macbook airs will help us a lot with our learning like helping us be more organized and answering our questions.

Here it is, the last writing piece for the year. It's about Kangaroos and Tasmanian Devils. This was an independent writing piece which we had to complete in about a week. I choose to do a non-fiction because I liked Pages and just doing it. One problem was that I kind of forgot how to publish a pages doc on the blog. So I checked my previous non-fiction and remembered how to do it. This time around, publishing the pages doc wasn't hard. I really enjoyed writing this non-fiction.

How would you feel if you didn’t achieve your lifelong goal?

How would you feel if you lost your right hand? Juan Ponce De Leon experienced not achieving a lifelong goal and only having one hand.

Juan Ponce De Leon was a brave spanish man. He was a man who lead groups and governed multiple areas. Juan Ponce De Leon has changed and made important differences to Spain. Juan Ponce De Leon changed Spain by killing the Muslims, the leaders of Spain during that time. The muslims had been ruling spain for over 700 years. Spanish people wanted to rule Spain, it was their country! Juan Ponce De Leon also discovered the Gulf Stream in 1513, which was the quickest way to return to Europe from the west. Juan Ponce De Leon was a leader. He was a leader in the Spanish conquest of the Americas. He also became governor of Puerto Rico in the 1500s. Juan Ponce De Leon went on an adventure and found Florida. Sadly he got shot by an arrow and died thinking that Florida was an island, but it wasn’t. Juan Ponce De Leon’s actions changed Spain. He was a leader and discovered places. He is a man to remember.

In life, everyone has at least one struggle. No one’s perfect! Juan Ponce De Leon had struggles during his life. Something he struggled with was losing his right hand! So he had to learn how to type with ONLY one hand. Not only that but he couldn’t do things that need two hands. That is crazy for an explorer. Juan Ponce De Leon also had to fight Native Americans that were on Hispaniola, an island he discovered. Luckily, he got his island back. Another thing that was a struggle for Juan Ponce De Leon was that he didn’t find the Fountain Of Youth. He was searching for this Fountain for a long time. People believe that the Fountain Of Youth would heal the sick and injured. Something good about that was that he discovered many more islands when he was looking for the Fountain! Juan Ponce De Leon had many struggles that he overcame and didn’t overcame. When he struggles, he’ll solve his problems. Sometimes he overcomes his struggles and other times he doesn’t. That’s normal.

Being in Juan Ponce De Leon’s shoes is a bit of a challenge. His life was full of challenges. Juan Ponce De Leon lost his right hand, if I were in his shoes, I’d be really bummed. It would give me limitations like only typing with one hand (if computers were invented in the 1400). Also riding a horse while holding a sword would be hard because you need one hand for the sword, and one hand for controlling the horse. Basically, I couldn’t do things that requires 2 hands. Another thing he went through was that he didn’t find the fountain of youth. If I were him, I’d be sad because it was my lifelong goal and I never achieved it. It’s like planning to climb Mt. Everest and suddenly an avalanche occurred right when you were climbing. Those 6 or 7 years of training is wasted. Now you know how I’d feel if I was Juan Ponce De Leon, it’s challenging.

As you can see, Juan Ponce De Leon faces many difficulties like losing a right hand and not achieving a lifelong goal. He also changed Spain, he helped kill the muslims to make Spain a independent country. Juan Ponce De Leon also found the Gulf Stream, a quicker route back to Spain. He shall not be forgotten.

Part 1
It was a sunny day outside Bobby Joe's house. Bobby Joe was 30. Everyday he went out to his back yard to water his flowers. His backyard was flat and has lots of grass. When rain came, the water would dry instantly.

"BEEP BEEP BEEP," Bobby Joe's alarm clock rang. Bobby Joe turned his alarm clock off and stepped out of his bed and made breakfast. All he had for breakfast was a bowl of cereal. When he finished eating, he put his dishes in the kitchen sink and got his watering pot. He filled his watering pot with water and went out to his backyard. He watered his flowers. The gardens was dry like usual. He went back in to take a bath and get changed. He was going to the super market to go get groceries. He entered the door and put his groceries down. He was growing a special plant that he would check on every hour of so. He went out to his backyard and checked on his special plant. It was fine. But when he was on his way to go inside his house, he spotted something very weird and strange.

Part 2
Bobby Joe looked at this mysterious thing. It looked like a puddle, but he knew that wasn't it. It can't be a puddle because water on his backyard dries up instantly. He looked at it very carefully for a couple of seconds. He couldn't find out what it was. He got his phone and called his friend that was really good at science. Soon, his friend came over to check out this liquid. He looked very carefully. Bobby Joe's friend told Bobby Joe that it was water. Bobby Joe was very surprised. His friend went back to his home and Bobby Joe thought about it again and again. "Was there something in that water that made it never dry?" Bobby Joe asked himself. He went outside and looked at it again.

The next day he cleaned the water up. He got a plastic cup from his kitchen and a giant bucket. Bobby Joe went outside and used the cup to scooped up the water and the bucket to keep the water in. When he was halfway there, he spotted a mysterious object in the water.

When I look at this photo, it seems like a boy jumped into a giant pool of peanut butter. Then when I look at it again carefully, it looks like a  boy fell into mud.

Johnny: 5 years old

"Hey dad, why do you have a camera in you hands?" Johnny asked.

"Don't mind me, I'm recording a video" his dad said.

"Hey Johnny" his mom said, "Your friends are here!"

"Yaaay!" Johnny said.

"The mud pool is over there!" his dad pointed.

All the kids jumped in.

"Here is Johnny...splash" his dad shouted.

Mud splash all over the camera. 

"NO! My very expensive camera!" his dad screamed, "It's all covered in...mud!"

And they never played with mud ever again. Or did they?...

Johnny: 6 years old

"It's a great day to go to the movies," mom told Johnny and his dad.

"I think so too," said Johnny's dad..

They got into their car and drove to the movies. It was pouring and mud got into Johnny's shoes.

"We're here," Johnny's dad said.

They parked their car and entered the mall. The are in the queue to buy tickets.

"What are we going to see?" Johnny asked his mom.

"Mr. Peabody and Sherman!" His mom replied.

They got the tickets and are entering the theater. The guard didn't let Johnny in.

"Why won't you let him go into the theater?!" His dad shouted at the guard.

"Sir, he has MUD in his shoes!" The guard replied.

The guard's dragged him out the theater and pushed him out the door. He landed on a giant puddle of mud. That is why Johnny's family never went to the theater to watch movies ever again. Or did they?...

The Last Skydive

After months of hard work, it all comes to this, The Last Skydive. This is my first fantasy piece. When writing fantasy stories, you are free to do anything you want. You don't have to follow earth's rules, no gravity is possible in fantasy. You can go crazy from flying dogs to breathing underwater.

I'd like to thank two people who helped me a lot. First, Mrs. Clayton. She helped me create a story map, editing, and dialogue. If Mrs. Clayton didn't help me with my story map or dialogue, this story wouldn't be as good as it is. The other person I'd like to thank is Alyssa. She read my story and gave me awesome feedback and some things that I could edit. That made my story even better.

Christalite Methodist Home

Today, our class went to the Christalite Methodist Home. Last time we went, we decorated Santa Hats with the people who stayed there. This time we let them decorate Hearts and make pasta Necklaces. I enjoyed going to the Home the first time because there was more people there. It was really hard to get people to come make the hearts and necklaces because everyone was eating their lunch. I really enjoyed being there both times.

P.E. Fitness Goals

Push-Ups

I my last fitness test, I was way below the healthy range of 7-20 push-ups. My goal is to get at least 5 push-ups. 

Pacer Test

I was really close to the healthy range of 23-82 laps. I got 20, my goal is to get at least 25 laps next time.

Crunches

I was in the healthy range of 23-80 crunches. I got 60, that was a big jump from last year because I only got 16. This year I want to get 70 crunches.

Sit And Reach
I was in the healthy range of 20-25. I got 23, smack down in the middle. My goal is to get 24 next time.

Flight, Or Invisibility?

     What should I choose, flight of invisibility?

     I would choose invisibility because if I choose to fly, then I can be seen and get caught. One more reason is that in some places, there is not much "flying room" to fly in.

     If I choose invisibility, when if I get bullied from a 10 foot teen, who think's he owns the whole world, then I can run to the bathroom and turn invisible. When that 10 foot teen goes away, I stop being invisible and run away (and yes tell an adult)!

     I can turn invisible in class and erase the teacher's plans. But I stop being invisible and go to the principal's office. In the principal's office I can turn invisible again and scare the principal...

     Writing... not the best subject in the world. So turn invisible and sleep. Or write while being invisible. What everyone sees is a moving pencil...

Tibetan Singing Bowls

Today we listen to Mr. Bill Cael play Ancient Tibetan Singing Bowls. The way Mr. Bill played them made them so awesome. This was a once in a life time experience.

When we were lying down with our eyes closed, he was playing the bowls. It sounded amazing. When he played it, I saw 2 things in my mind. Color and happy moments in my life. The other thing I felt was ringing. It felt like it was coming from  the floor.

Images Of Singapore

Today Mrs.Clayton's,  Mr.DeMichele's,  Ms. Hooykaas', and Ms Xuereb's class went to the Images Of Singapore Museum. This museum is located in Sentosa. I was in Greg's group, his dad came. Other people in Greg's group were, Julia, Alyssa, Nandita, Greg, and I. After we went in to the museum, almost half the kids played bullrush. The purpose of this field trip was to start Social Studies. What would be a better way?

One thing Greg and I learned is that walking on fire is not a punishment, it is a tradition. Another thing that we learned was that early construction workers were girls. The final thing I learned is about the 4 rings or winds that made Singapore. Each country had their own belief. They were, to have family, to have community, to have peace, and to have harmony. Those 4 people who told their country's worked together and made a lot of Singapore.

I had lots of fun during this field trip.

Sharks

After about a month of hard work and fighting against problems, it all comes to this. My first non-fiction. It is about sharks. I'd like to thank Mrs. Clayton and Ms. Lynch for helping me with both my writing and the problems on the computer.

I learned a lot about non-fiction. One thing I learned during non-fiction was using an app called pages. We used pages for the layout. At first I thought non-fiction was boring because all we were doing was getting facts from books. Later on in the writing process, I started to think that non-fiction wasn't that boring. Then when we went into pages, I thought that non-fiction was actually was fun.
