TreeHugger Post

According to treehugger.com and one of its articles, Trouble brewing for coffee pods as German city bans them to reduce waste, German cities are banning coffee pods to reduce waste.

In Germany, a city called Hamburg introduced a ban on purchasing equipment for hot drinks in which proportional packaging is used, or coffee pods, which make up 1/8 of coffee's sold in Germany. According to Jan Dube, spokesman of the Hamburg Department of the Environment and Energy, proportional packs such as coffee pods create unnecessary pollution as the pods are made out of plastic and aluminum which make them very hard to recycle. Even though companies such as Nespresso, who have recycling plants who separate the foil from the plastic, Germany still believes that it isn't effective enough.

Science Questions:

1. Of all the spacecraft humans have developed which one has traveled the furthest?
Voyager 1

2. What are the 6 lines of our cosmic address?
Earth
Solar System
Milky Way Galaxy
Local Group
Virgo Supercluster
Observable Universe

3. Why were Giordano Bruno's ideas so controversial?
Bruno's ideas were so controversial because his ideas were not correct/possible compared to the churches beliefs back then. He talked about different worlds that God, the creator, made which is impossible according the churches beliefs back then.

4. According to the cosmic calendar, how long ago did we begin to use science to reveal natures secrets and her laws?
a. 1 month
b. 1 minute
c. 1 year
d. 1 second

Catalyst 10

Dear Mom and Dad,
I'm looking forward to you coming to my science design fair on December 17th from 1:40 to 2:10.

My group and I are working on an invention that is answering our driving question- "How can we save our world?". We created an invention to help prevent people from dying because of tornadoes. Our designs will be set up in our core classes and I will give you further information next week.

The link to our project is here: http://tornadosafetyonline.weebly.com/

I would like tonight, to share with you what our group has come up with so far. I would love to hear your feedback and share it with my group.. My teacher has asked me to have you write me back on an EMAIL so I can provide the feedback we discuss with my group. I value your opinion because you have lived MUCH longer than I have and experienced MUCH more than I have.

I love you and so looking forward to you coming.

Your Son,
Johan

Interactive Map

This is a map of the Philippines. This map only shows significant earthquakes recorded from 1900 through early 2014. As you can see, there are many dots on the map, this is because the dots represent earthquakes and the colors of the dots represent the magnitude of the earthquakes. The brighter blue dots represent magnitude 5 or 6 earthquakes while the darker blue dots represent magnitude 8 or 9 earthquakes. Looking at the map, you can see that the Philippines has lots of significant earthquakes.

Johan Plate Boundary Exercise

When India crashed into Asia, the Himalayas, where Mount Everest is, were formed. Before, India was it's own island, but now, it's part of Asia. Right now, India is still moving into Asia so the Himalayas is getting taller and taller. This is an example of a convergent plate boundary and it is continental vs. continent.

Age Of The Ocean Floor Pre-Test

1. Where are the oldest parts of the oceans?
The oldest parts of the ocean are located at the bottom of the ocean.

2. Do the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic ocean basins have the same age and patterns.
I think that the ocean basins don't the same age and have different patterns because the basins can be different.

3. How does the age of the ocean floor compare with the age of rocks on the continents?
I think that the ocean floor is older than the continents because the rocks could've been created when the ocean was already there.

Week 2

1. What is the difference between an Observations and an Inference?
An observation is something that you observe, like things that you smell, see, hear, taste, and touch. An inference is an educated guess like a conclusion which you can find with your observations.

2. How can inferences and observations be related?
They both can help you find out the answers to questions. They are both pieces of information.

3. Why are both observations and inferences important in science?
They can help you determine questions or things that aren't clear.

Grade 6 Crime Scene Investigation (CSI)

1) Who do you think is responsible for the crime? Why?
I think it is one of the three RLA/SS teachers because of the evidence one of them left behind. First of all, there was a sheet of paper that said 'There are way more subjects better than Science' and pictures of math, music, and social studies right next to it. This shows that it is one of the teachers who envies Science. This eliminates the two Chinese teachers, Mr Oswald, and Coach Goode. Secondly, there was another sheet of paper on the gerbil cage saying, "...My kids prefer pets with names like Snoopy or Spot...", this shows that the suspect has young kids. This eliminates Ms McComb because her kids are in high school. Finally, the chairs were stacked to look like a pyramid. I think that this pyramid is referring to Egypt which is part of the social studies curriculum. This shows that this teacher thinks that social studies is better than science and/or likes social studies.

2) Does anything need further analysis?
Yes, the evidence the suspect left behind during the crime. We should take the evidence and check the fingerprints on it to comfirm who did it.

Electromagnetic Fishing Pole

My fishing pole works because it is an electromagnet. An electromagnet works because it produces a magnetic field around a wire in a completed circuit, meaning that the electric current can flow through all the components of the circuit. To make the magnetic field stronger, you have to coil it around a nail.

My Electromagnetic Fishing Pole
To make my fishing pole, I used a nail, two meters of wire, a wooden stick, two double A batteries, a battery holder, and some aluminum foil. The aluminum foil was the switch because it could hold the electric current coming from the wire underneath it. To turn on the current, you have to take the other wire and touch it with the aluminum foil. The switch works because the wires only produce a magnetic field around themselves when the circuit is complete. Basically, the switch breaks and completes the circuit.

Electricity Quiz Board

So basically, the game board was just a complete circuit. It had a two batteries, a lightbulb, and a four of wires. When you touch the correct question to the answer, the electrons flow through the wire which make a complete circuit. The question and answer part was just like an extra wire, it doesn't hurt the circuit when it is included. Even without the question and answer part, just connect the two alligator clips and the circuit would still work.

Friday
(April 3)
Presentation Day!
(For 3rd Grade)

Water Presentation is presented
(For Science Class)

On Monday, we presented to Ms Dripps' 3rd grade class. We would present on Monday, March 30 at 9:00 am. This was the best time to present because it was during science (so we had permission to leave the science classroom) and it gave us half an hour to make last minute preparations/rehearse.

At 8:55 am, we left the science classroom to get to Ms Dripps' class on time. We got there three minutes early and just waited outside the classroom. Kea-Roy peeked inside and told me that they were doing something, tech or reading. Then, a very excited kid skipped out of the room and drank from the water fountain. I think he was the one who told Ms Dripps we were here. The IA came out and welcomed us in.

Ms Dripps told us that airplay wasn't working right and you wouldn't be able to connect to airplay via wifi. The only way to connect was to plug in a plug. The 3rd graders were starting to head down to the carpet where they would listen to our presentation. Kea-Roy plugged his computer in but it would only show Kea-Roy's desktop on the airplay screen. I tried my computer but the same thing happened. Luckily, Ms Dripps booked the 3rd grade group room. So Kea-Roy and I headed there. We connected to airplay via wifi and it worked.

We presented our presentation filled with facts. One fact was every minute a child dies from a water related disease. After we presented the facts, we played a game. It was a Scratch game coded by Kea-Roy. We split the class in half and assigned them to either my computer or Kea-Roy's computer. They were really like the game and they didn't want to stop playing.

I think this was a very successful water project. Also, I felt that there were no major problem we had to face along the way. The hard work of making the game and presentation paid off!

Water Project - Week 4: Spring Break

Week 4 was spring break so I didn't really do much work on the project. The only thing I did was rehearse my lines for the presentation on Monday, March 30.
